Part & Mold Design:

Efficient production requires efficient part design, effective mold design, and accurate mold making. We can work with a napkin sketch, an existing part, or an engineering drawing and look closely for areas of improvement. These improvements may include: part weight reduction, quality defect resolution, cycle time reduction, or more robust mold design. Then, utilizing state of the art equipment, we design and build the mold, the material handling, and the process that will withstand the test of time.

All designs are modeled in fully parametric 3 dimensional solids using PTC's Creo Parametric (Pro/ENGINEER). Mold core and cavity designs are extracted directly from the 3D model of the part. The corresponding electrodes, in turn, can be programmed for machining directly from the 3D model without translation. Part design changes are instantaneous due to the parametric nature of the model. Changes to the part are linked to the detailed drawings of the mold. No step is missed.

We take great care in choosing mold construction materials that will stand up to the year in year out wear and tear. Most molds we build use steels that are hardened to 60+ Rc. These are not always the easiest materials to work with but, to mold flash free tight tolerance parts for years and years they are a must.

When designing a mold we concentrate on keeping the mold compact. This adds to the accuracy of the part and minimizes molding-related variations. Other concepts we employ promote the durability of the mold for years of service with a minimum of maintenance and repair issues.
