HOORAY!! Old Man Winter is finally moving on, or so it seems on certain days. For those of us in Northern Ohio, enduring another winter is a required rite of passage. The Spring thaw is upon us, it’s time to come out of our winter cocoons, look around, and see what the Spring has to offer. That means it’s time to get up and go!
Go outside that is. The benefits of the outdoors are well documented by the medical community. Portage and Summit counties are blessed with many hiking and biking trails, ranging from easy to difficult. Some of these trails would even lead you to believe that you are far away from any urban atmosphere. These trails are easily found by Googling “Portage County hiking trails,” or “Summit County hiking trails.”
Along with these close-by trails, there is one real diamond that deserves our attention that is also a short drive away. That is the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The history of this park goes back to the 1820s when the towpath began hauling goods from Cleveland to Akron. The Towpath Trail follows the canal for 20 miles within the park with many waypoints to begin or end your walk. A popular starting place is in Peninsula where the Winking Lizard Restaurant provides a well-deserved liquid reward for those who have experienced the benefits of the trail.
In addition to the towpath trail, there are over a hundred miles of side trails that can give real meaning to “a walk in the woods.” Free maps are available at each entry point and at the store in Boston.
Not interested in hiking? Too bad, but there’s still hope for you. Our beloved Indians have begun this year’s quest for a World Series championship. You may not be exercising but at least you’re still outside. There’s not much more enjoyable than a day at the ball park watching the Tribe while having a hot dog and liquid refreshment. It’s an all American delight.
How’s the fishing? While Lake Erie has its Walleye, there are many lakes and streams in this region that provide excellent fishing. Try the lakes in the Metro Parks, or some of the streams like the Cuyahoga around Kent. The Rocky River has been ranked as one of the top 10 in the USA for Smallmouth Bass.
Better still, take a kid fishing, they love it. The places to fish are too numerous to mention, so many that if you like to fish, you have no excuse to stay home.
Still undecided? How long has it been since you’ve been to the Cleveland Zoo? It’s one of the best in the country and the recent announcement that they are expecting the arrival of a baby Rhino is the zoo news of the day. The anticipation of such a blessed event would certainly send a normal person into an expectant frenzy.
OK, and lastly, check out the schedule for Blossom Music Center. It also is one of the best music facilities this country has to offer. Many events allow you to bring a nice romantic candlelight dinner to dine on the lawn. A candle and a bottle of fine wine….what could be nicer? Check the weather first. So much to do, so little time. But first, you have to GET UP AND GO!
Remember, every day is a gift.
